Expanding the Concept of Krama: From Yoga to Theater Performance
Workshop hosted by Laurence Maman and Lara Bruhl
Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th October 2026
Saturday : 9:30 am to 7:00 pm (break from 12:45 to 2:00 pm)
Sunday : 9:30 am to 5:00 pm (break from 12:45 to 2:00 pm)
In yoga, the use of krama—which is primarily applied to breathing (exhaling and/or inhaling in stages)—produces very specific effects. First, the breathing phases directly involved are lengthened. But the other phases of the breath are also altered. By extension, this practice of interrupting the movement can also be applied to the practice of postures.
We will focus particularly on the spaces thus created within an action itself: the deliberate interruption of a potentially automatic “natural” movement; suspension; a different relationship to time, movement, stillness, and perhaps the flow of thoughts.
An in-between, an interim moment, which we will pause to explore and experience. An art of the pause.

This workshop will therefore provide an opportunity to experiment with the tools offered by yoga in dialogue with stage performance: improvisations, work on the qualities of the body, and exploration of rhythm as a transitional movement, based on texts from the Indian tradition and various scenes drawn from classical and contemporary theater.
The aim will be to observe the dynamic of transformation that continually permeates our life experience.
What do we discover when we become open and attentive, not only to what appears, but also to the way in which things unfold?
We will approach this “IN-BETWEEN” as a space of awareness where the transitions from one state to another become perceptible.
How, through these intervals, can every gesture, every word, and every sensation carry the potential for becoming?
